About the author
Liliana Mammino
Is a graduate the University of Pisa and received her PhD at the State University of Moscow in 1982. She has taught general chemistry and chemistry-physics at the National University of Somalia, the University of Zambia, the University of Lesotho and in Italian High Schools. She is continuing her research in theoretical chemistry, the didactic of chemistry and general science. She has published many manuscripts with Scientific National and International Review. D’Anna is her publishing company, but she has just recently issued one of her books about scientific language with another important Italian Publishing House.
The new edition of Chimica Viva maintains the characteristics of the previous edition, but further develops its quality following the modern guidelines and exigencies of the didactic of chemistry.
Structure of the book
The work is divided into three independent books, each one dedicated to a specific chemical topic.
- Matter and the substance: an introduction to basic chemistry (molecules, formulas, mole) and then microscopic world of the atoms and molecules;
- Chemical reactions: details aspects of chemical phenomenon (the products of different category of reactions, the energetic aspects of chemical reactions, the reactions speed, the chemical balance, the reactions in solutions, the electrochemical phenomenon);
- Chemistry around us: describes the aspects of chemistry linked to everyday life. The study of inorganic and organic substances, the biochemistry mainstay, the chemical industry and aspects concerning the important theme of environment.
The book is rich with pictures and detailed captions to make the reading easier. The pictures are fundamental to chemistry because they illustrate the reality of those elements belonging to the microscopic world of atoms and molecules and the phenomenon around them. The pictures help us to see the interpretative level of chemistry and to understand the mutual relationship between macroscopic and microscopic events.
Students have many exercises in different categories with varying degrees of difficulty. Some exercises associate the physic meaning of numeric value with measures, some others provided critical analysis about the way people communicate with regard to scientific content. The section titled Laboratory explains exercises of using different instruments and tools to meet the didactic and practical needs of teachers.
Emphasis
- The author uses a very rigorous and simple language to exploit a better explain of every chemical concept and aspects described in the book.
- This updated edition mixes the traditional chemical knowledge with a variety of new information to show the behaviour of the substances and the research and heritage of chemistry.

The section Tools for the teacher can be considered as an informal conversation made up of questions and exercises. It also explains the author’s beliefs with respect to teaching chemistry.
